Every year, people use millions of rolls of plastic cling film. This thin, disposable, and at first glance, harmless material ends up in landfills and oceans and remains there for centuries. It slowly releases chemicals into the environment long after we have thrown it away. Just imagine, every sandwich wrap used in the 90s still exists today.

Looking for an alternative, Sarah Kaeck came up with a solution in her Vermont kitchen over ten years ago. Tired of relying on single-use plastic, she decided to turn to an old-fashioned, forgotten method of product wrapping. She created Bee’s Wrap – a reusable food wrap made of cotton soaked in bees wax and other natural products so that it can mold around food and hold its shape, just like cling film.

The Anatomy of a Wrap: Materials & Sourcing

So, what makes Bee’s Wrap safe and reliable? These are its simple but carefully selected components and thoughtful approach to production.

Each of the four wrap ingredients has its own benefits:

  • Organic cotton, certified by GOTS, creates a mild and breathable base and gives the wrap its structure;
  • Beeswax from a sustainable source makes a protective, antibacterial seal;
  • Organic jojoba oil adds softness and flexibility, even after multiple uses;
  • Tree resin adds the necessary amount of stickiness and prolongs its usage.

As a B Corp member, the company takes full responsibility for sourcing beeswax. Bee’s Wrap works with beekeepers who maintain their hives in organic landscapes, away from pesticides and GMOs. This ensures that wraps are clean and safe.

In partnership with 5 Gyres Institute and 1% for the Planet, Bee’s Wrap aims to reduce plastic pollution and protect a better life for communities, wildlife, and the next generation.

Even the end product is designed to return to earth – it’s fully compostable after you no longer use it.

The Production: From Vermont to the World

From a simple kitchen experiment, Bee’s Wrap has grown into a global product now sold worldwide.

According to a VermontBiz report, the company shifted to the 12,000-square-foot Middlebury facility, which was necessary to keep up with demand.

Kaeck believes that Bee’s Wrap experienced rapid growth after a viral video advertising their company was displayed on BuzzFeed. It generated tens of millions of views, causing the company to sell out and quickly scale up production.

How It Works: The Science of the Seal

The magic of Bee’s wrap starts when you warm it with your hands. By pressing the wrap around a dish or a piece of fruit, you soften the beeswax. This creates a safe, custom seal that actually mimics the natural skin wrap.

Unlike plastic wrap, which holds moisture and can cause “sweating” or mold, beeswax protects food, allowing air in. So, bread remains crispy, cheese doesn’t go rancid, and herbs stay bright.

Bee’s Wrap does more than preserve flavor; it reduces food waste. By extending the life of leftovers, a single wrap can prevent pounds of spoiled food from going to the trash.

With proper care – delicate washing in cool water with mild soap – your Bee’s Wrap can be used for up to a year. When its life cycle ends, the company recommends cutting it into strips and returning it to the soil as compost.

The Product Suite: Choosing Your Format

Thoughtful ingredients demand thoughtful design, which is why the collection offers a range of formats to suit every corner of your kitchen. Aesthetics shine in every wrapping piece created by Bee’s Wrap. Choose from pastel colors to a bright palette to suit your needs and tastes.

Get your bread wrap to keep your baguette golden and crisp, or pick a wrap for your sandwich that features a charming wooden bee button and string, turning your lunch into a beautifully tied gift.

The company also offers the perfect starter kit, consisting of several wraps in different sizes – from preventing a half lemon from drying out and keeping a block of cheddar fresh to covering a large salad bowl.

There is also an option for those preferring vegan products. By replacing beeswax with Candelilla and Carnauba, they offer a plant-based choice that works the same way as the original.

Bee’s Wrap believes that one person can save over 1,600 square feet of plastic each year by using a sustainable wrap. This small step in our everyday lives may bring about a big change in the environmental protection of the whole planet.

Sometimes, progress isn’t about high-tech devices, but about rediscovering something simple and reliable.
