A young woman in a green T-shirt sits in the dark against a red velvet backdrop, her face lit by the glow of her phone

The dopamine science behind late-night scrolling, snacking and shopping, and how a little friction can bring back real rest.

Words | Kate Dench

It’s 11 p.m., and you pick up your phone “for five minutes.” Five becomes ten, then half an hour. As you glance at the time at 1 a.m., you realize that your quick browse has turned into a cart full of things you didn’t need.

Maybe you have another snack before going to bed. You aren’t hungry, but the day has been exhausting, and you figure you’ve earned it. Before you know it, you’re laughing at reels with a bag of chips at three in the morning.

These moments feel deserved. They offer a brief respite from the noise of life. They deliver, so we keep coming back.

We live in an age where comfort is available on demand. Entertainment arrives instantly, food preparation requires almost no effort, and shopping takes just one tap. Boredom and friction have become optional. Despite this convenience, many of the world’s wealthiest and most comfortable societies report rising rates of anxiety, loneliness, addiction, and emotional distress.

Perhaps the question isn’t whywe seek comfort because we all need…
