Spreading holiday cheer - ethically, without breaking the bank

Every holiday season sees a surge of shopping sprees, last-minute purchases, over-consumption, and waste. But a global market adjusting to more environmentally-conscious consumers is now taking pains to shift towards sustainable and carbon-neutral practices – in all phases of the supply chain. The result is growing efforts to help you be kind to your loved ones, the planet, and your wallet – with eco-friendly gifts that will not break the bank.

We researched some of the internet’s offerings of eco-friendly gifts – each under $100 – and this article is a carefully curated list of the very best. Happy holidays!

Verve Culture’s Artisanal Citrus Juicer - $99

Social media is overflowing with videos of people juicing everything under the sun, and while the results look delicious (and often budget-friendly), the massive stainless-steel machines being used aren’t exactly kind to your counter space.

If you want something more practical, this artisan compact juicer from Verve Culture comes in at under $100 and offers a much more manageable alternative. Plus, it is sustainably handcrafted from recycled aluminum.

Free the Ocean’s Garden in a bag - $17.95

At less than $18, Free the Ocean’s “Garden in a bag” is the perfect gift for apartment dwellers looking to grow something green in a limited space. With over 20 kinds of plant variants, the bag includes a growing medium, seeds, coconut husks for drainage and directions – everything your recipient needs to get started on their gardening journey.

Better yet, the team commits to removing 10 pieces of plastic from the oceans for every purchase, as well as donating a portion of profits to NGOs dedicated to protecting our oceans!

SeaBag Maine’s Shipwright Large Wristlet

SeaBag Maine’s Shipwright Large Wristlet $45

Handmade in Maine from locally sourced, recycled sailcloth, the Shipwright Large Wristlet is a practical purse, large enough to carry the necessities without getting in the way. Every purchase supports local craftsmanship and contributes to SeaBags’ women’s sailing team, with a portion of the revenue helping fund their initiatives.

They cover the post holiday bulge, they’re mildly psychedelic looking yet sedate and demure enough to pass for whimsical instead, arrive in plastic free packaging and they were made from 28 recycled plastic bottles. Santa would approve.

To date, SeaBags has collected over 1.5 million pounds of sailcloth that would otherwise have been relegated to landfills.

The wristlets are printed with the cabin plan and sail plan of two iconic boats, the 30-foot Sharpie-Cruiser and the 30-foot Hampden Boat. You can use it as a wallet, a bag organiser, or a statement purse.

Blooh’s Nala Drop Earrings $94.12

Crafted in Kenya, these earrings are reminiscent of delicate, finely carved javelins. They are made of a combination of metal and ethically reclaimed horn sourced from cattle in the Rift Valley region. You can choose between brass, 24K gold plating, or silver, so you can pair them with any outfit.

Founder Sangya Gyawali is a firm believer in sustainable practices that empower local communities. Blooh puts this into practice by rigorously vetting their supply chain to prevent child labor, sourcing locally to minimize transportation and carbon footprint, and relying on reclaimed and upcycled materials such as recycled metals and horn from the local cattle industry.

Vahy’s Neon Neroli Scented Candle $72

Citrusy and floral, the Neon Neroli Candle is layered with notes of bergamot, vanilla, neroli, and orange flower. All Vahy’s candles are made from cruelty-free soy wax, so they’re biodegradable and have a lower carbon-footprint than paraffin wax, which requires petroleum extraction. They also use all-natural fragrances and are free of petrochemicals, which, combined with the reduced environmental impact makes them ideal gifts for the sustainability-minded consumer.

The Australian brand is committed to sustainably sourced, biodegradable, and upcycled ingredients. It also uses a closed-loop recycling program, which not only utilises recycled packaging but rewards customers for returning used fragrance bottles in their post-use recycling service.

Harvest and Mill’s Women's Organic Straight Leg Lounge Pants in Natural

Harvest and Mill’s Women's Organic Straight Leg Lounge Pants in Natural $73

For the friend who likes to relax after the post-meal rush? Lounge pants. Trust us, get her the lounge pants. Or more specifically: these Women’s Organic Straight Leg Lounge Pants in Natural. These pants will feel lighter than the fleece we all turn to for warmth in the holidays, and are completely undyed, unbleached cotton.

…honestly, putting even a tiny dent in the deforestation of about a million trees every day just by switching what kind of TP you use sounds like a win.

Grown (sans pesticide), spun, knit, and sewn in the USA, the brand touts these as a carbon-neutral product. What that translates to is a guarantee of a life-cycle assessment, ensuring that reductions to the carbon emissions of all processes (sourcing, production, packaging, operations) and the purchase of carbon offsets (various environmental projects) result in a product that – if done right – does not contribute to global warming.

The packaging and shipping materials are plastic-free, recyclable, compostable, and reusable. The company claims significantly less GHG emissions than its competitors and consumes almost half as much energy and 50% less water than them, too. So when they say relax, really, you can relax.

Knyt Studios Beige Nora Dress $59.00

Whether you’re walking off to admire the walls or kicking off your shoes to relax, the Nora dress is effortlessly graceful. It’s also ridiculously easy to dress up with statement jewelry, a cape, a shrug, or a simple pair of heels.

The company also works only with sustainable or deadstock fabric. Far too often, factories will overproduce, misorder, or simply not use fabric that will serve no further purpose than joining a landfill.

Knyt Studios utilises that, creating unique, small batch collections, reducing textile waste, and the overconsumption of water and energy in new fabric production. Creating and supporting a circular fashion system in the global fashion industry is no longer a want – it is a need, and mother-daughter founders, Gabrielle and Lillia, understand that.

Silverwind’s Dark Purple Paisley High Waisted Flare Leggings $68

They cover the post-holiday bulge, they’re mildly psychedelic looking yet sedate enough to pass for whimsical. They arrive in plastic-free packaging and were made from 28 recycled plastic bottles.

Your loved one will look and feel amazing, and you’ll have avoided about 19.6 kg of CO2 emissions.

The Dark Purple Paisley High Waisted Flare Leggings were made for the pilates divas in your life who never miss a session (or those who may need some cat-cow poses after the stress of the holidays).

Salter House’s Aidan Koch Napkins

Salter House’s Aidan Koch Napkins $36

Sustainable clothing company Salter House partnered with educator, graphic novelist, and artist Aidan Koch. The result is the most gorgeous linen napkins embroidered in gently flowing designs of white flowers and a woman’s hands on a white napkin.

Each napkin is crafted out of flax by a family-owned, zero-waste company committed to sustainable farming practices. Buy some for the young adult who just moved into their first apartment, or for the newlyweds, for all the years, the spills, the stories, and adventures they have yet to have.

Who Gives a Crap’s The Sweet Limited Edition $66

After all the festive indulgence, it would be tragic if a trip to the bathroom left guests – and host – shall we say …empty-handed? Who Gives a Crap has you covered, with extra-cushy toilet rolls made from bamboo fibers.

The profit-for-purpose company sells plastic-free home products in over 30 countries and donates 50% of profits to improving global sanitation standards by building toilets in the developing world.

Who Gives a Crap’s The Sweet Limited Edition

Bamboo grows incredibly fast, making it far more sustainable than trees. Switching to bamboo toilet paper reduces the demand for tree-based products—and even small daily choices help slow the loss of the roughly one million trees cut down each day. Plus, bamboo’s naturally long fibers create a toilet paper that’s softer and stronger than recycled alternatives.

So if you want to take care of the planet, and your loved ones’ delicate derrières, gift the Sweet Edition: 24-48 rolls of Christmas-themed TP, all in a gingerbread box, so you don’t need extra wrapping paper either.
