“Please, sir, can I have some more?” It is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of foster care. Foster care in the media is far different than what goes on today in the United States. Traditional orphanages, like those depicted in Oliver Twist and Annie, no longer exist in the US. Instead, children without parents are placed in a state-run foster care system that prioritizes family-based care, like foster homes or specialized residential systems that work with privatized adoption agencies. The history of foster care in the US can be traced back to English indentured servitude laws. Since then, the system has evolved with the introduction of child protection laws. While foster care in the US has come a long way, the system still faces serious challenges.
